Spring 2012 Brown Bag Speakers Series
Tuesdays throughout the Spring 2012 semester, Rainbow Lifelong Learning Institute Boston will offer a series of Brown Bag Speakers.
Brown Bag presentations are free of charge and do not require registration to attend. Both students in our courses and non-students are welcome to participate.
Brown Bag speakers are scheduled during the lunch period between the morning and afternoon Courses for that day. As the name suggests, participants are welcome to bring a bag or box lunch to eat during the speaker’s talk.
Presentations will run from 12:15 p.m. -1:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoons at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, 630 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington, MA. Please use the Mass Ave entrance to attend both Brown Bag talks and courses.
May 1: The Lost and Found Children of Nepal.
Michael Hess operates Papa’s House Orphanages in Nepal. A slide show of several visits to Nepal will highlight the narrative of the stories of children who found a future in their native country. Presenter: Bob Linscott, (Michael Hess’s brother) Assistant Director of the LGBT Aging Project, is also the Program Coordinator of Forty and Over at Fenway Community Health Center. Mr. Linscott holds a Divinity degree from Harvard University.
May 15: Spectator Sports.
A reading of Chapter 4 of the novella, Broadleaf-Reed Lectures, a manuscript unearthed by Mahalia Dunne-Naranjo and Joel Campos from a remote plateau high in the Andes. This chapter describes the broadleaf-reed people’s superior form of sportsmanship, envisioned by Dunne-Naranjo as replacing football and soccer, but not without political repercussons.
Presenter: Bill Himelhoch, a master wordsmith, holds an M.A. in English from the University of Michigan and participated in a writing intensive at Skidmore College in 2008. As he states ‘writing this social/political satire has given meaning to his twilight years’.
May 22: Mother-Talk: Conversations with Mothers of Lesbian and FTM Transgender Children.
Based on interviews of twenty-four mothers, Mother Talk captures what it is like to be the mother of a lesbian daughter, or FTM trans child, taking its readers into the lives of women as they relate the complexities of the mother-daughter rel ationship, their experience of coming to terms with a gay daughter, or a child who is changing sex-and overcoming shame and self consciousness in their fierce determination to remain connected. Dr. Pearlman will read sections and discuss her book. Presenter: Sarah F. Pearlman, Ph.D., recipient of the 2011 Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution by the American Psychological Association’s Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered Issues is recognized as a leading pioneer in the field of lesbian psychology. For many years Dr. Pearlman was a professor, in Clinical Psychology at the University of Hartford.
