D.C.’s Arena Stage to open U.S. tour of "The Normal Heart"

Washington’s Arena Stage plans to launch a national tour of the 2011 Tony Award-winning production of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart, while the theater postpones the world-premiere musical Like Water for Chocolate.

Arena announced Wednesday, Nov. 16 that The Normal Heart will run June 8 to July 29, 2012. The AIDS drama will coincide with the international conference AIDS 2012 that is returning to the United States for the first time in 22 years.

Artistic Director Molly Smith says Arena must make other changes to its season due to budget cuts totaling about $1 million over two years. Earlier this year, Congress cut funding for the National Capital Arts and Cultural Affairs program, which funded some Arena productions.

Arena is postponing the premiere of Tazewell Thompson’s play Mary T. & Lizzy K.
